This Year

This year in Yeshayahu and now in Yirmiyahu, we have focused on the action/reaction standpoint rather than the geopolitical on the events that happened. We spoke about how, for example, everything each king did had repercussions, whether they be rewards for doing something good, or punishments for something bad. However, I think it is possible that it is a little of both. If we have free will, why is it not possible that Assyria attacked us and Shomron fell because of completely natural political reasons, and the people sinning is merely a reason given for the punishments? What if everything we've ever learned about Hashem punishing us for our misdeeds is just a ploy used to deceive us? Why would Hashem continue to protect us, even though He knows we will only do the wrong thing?

Sorry it's kind of random.

  1. I don't think it was a ploy because

    1. The people were unsure of who to submit to- Babylon or Egypt? It obviously wasn't some natural oh, of course Babylon will be the next superpower thing. It wasnt obvious because the people were unsure.

    2. Yirmiyahu correctly predicted that Babylon would be the next superpower. He correctly predicted everything that would happen. If Babylon had taken over and was not being used as a device of G-d, they wouldn't have exiled the Jews.

    3. The Jews were sinning and it all matches up.

    4. So you're saying G-d does exist, and He is the one using the events as a way to trick us? Or just some random dude is doing that?

    5. Hashem continues to protect us because there is always the option of teshuva, and a lot of people do good. Jews arent bad in the same way now as they were before. So G-d continues to protect us. And G-d continues to protect us because we have a moral code that we should use to get others to follow. And if we dont, who knows if others would? Sure you can say Christianity has morals, but those only came from Judaism. If you think about it, no other people had morals the way the Jews did. Not even in more advanced societies. These ethics dont appear until Judaism spreads them (via the accidental birth of Christianity perhaps.)

    6. G-d promised we would be His nation.

    7. Who says He knows we will do the wrong thing? Who says everyone is doing the wrong thing? There are some really good people in this world. They sin sometimes but they feel bad and apologize, or dont realize.

  2. I understand your point I could also very well see the other side because we learned from the Navis that Assyria and all those other countries only come to power because of God, and once they are haughty God shows them that it is not all their doings, but God made this happen.
Also Yirmiyahu said that bad things (like conquering, like Zahava said will happen if they sin therefore it shows that it is a result of their wrongdoings.

  3. i would like to respond to one of those points about why G-d continues protecting us even though He knows we will do the wrong thing. Maybe it is because we always have the option to do good, and he wants us to try to push ourselves to do so. our actions are not necessarily set in stone. we always have the ability to decide whether we will sin or not. to dissuade us from picking sinning over doing the right thing, G-d punishes us. he still loves us and hopes we will do whats right the next time.
